Getting started · Spoiler-light

Your first few hours go better when each trip has one purpose. Leave with a quest or recipe in mind, collect what that task needs, and head home before healing supplies or the Shroud timer become the real objective. Clearing every camp can wait.

For a new Enshrouded player, this beginner guide is a short route through the first decisions. Follow one journal task, gather what it needs, and check the list again after a survivor unlocks something new.

Start a fresh world or continue an old save?

Both are supported. Keen Games specifically encourages returning players to consider a fresh start because it reworked the first hours and early crafting recipes for 1.0. If you load an Early Access save, check your skill tree before doing anything else: the official changelog says it resets on the first 1.0 load. Reassign points to match your current weapon and role, then inspect your action bar and equipment.

A sensible order for your first session

  1. Follow the opening objective until the core tools make sense. Read the quest text, learn how your journal separates main quests from side quests, and use the map rather than trying to memorize every landmark.
  2. Establish one practical home base. Place a Flame Altar where you can return easily, make a compact shelter, and put storage close to the crafting area. Leave room to expand; a starter base does not need to be a castle.
  3. Collect with a purpose. Bring back the materials your current quest or recipe asks for. The 1.0 changelog says early recipes were reworked to reduce grind, so old Early Access shopping lists may be stale.
  4. Rescue and use survivors as progression unlocks. When a quest points you toward a survivor, treat that objective as a way to grow your crafting options. Return to base and check newly available recipes before spending a long time gathering unrelated materials.
  5. Take a short, low-risk exploration run. Pick a nearby point of interest, mark it, and return before you have used every healing or recovery option.

1.0 change: Springlands and Revelwood received additional early-game chests, some roads and camps were adjusted, and crafting progression recipes were reworked. If an older video says a recipe requires a particular pickup, verify it in your current build first.

Set up your action bar before leaving

Keep the items you may need under pressure easy to reach: your primary weapon, a second option for a different range, healing, and exploration tools. Enshrouded’s official help page notes that the action bar has two rows and that equipment can be managed from the character screen or backpack. Equip the glider and grappling hook before expecting to use them; carrying a tool is not the same as having it equipped.

Beginner checklist

  • Check the quest journal and choose one main objective.
  • Make sure your weapon, armor, healing, and traversal tools are equipped.
  • Carry food that supports your intended playstyle; food grants temporary stat bonuses.
  • Set a named map marker for your next destination and another for a useful return landmark.
  • Return to base to craft and review new recipes after completing a quest milestone.

Treat this checklist as a quick beginner guide, not a fixed route. Skip steps your journal has already covered, and come back when you need a reminder.

Keep this guide handy for the next beginner milestone: a new tool, survivor, or recipe.
