Building & home setup
A useful home setup lets you unload, craft, and head out again without crossing a maze of furniture. Choose a reachable spot with room to grow; decoration can wait until the daily loop feels comfortable.
How to choose a location
- Prioritize return convenience. A beautiful ridge is less useful if your routine becomes a long walk after every expedition.
- Check the approach and terrain. Look for enough buildable ground for stations and storage, plus a route that is not frustrating to reach.
- Think about the map, not just the view. A second Flame Altar can be useful as a strategic fast-travel point above the Shroud, once your Flame upgrades allow more altars.
- Leave room for future systems. 1.0 adds Sparkworks interactive props, and large bases benefit from an organized area for experiments.
PC Gamer’s base-location feature frames the choice around the kind of home a player wants—scenic, practical, or a renovation project. Use that as a starting point: weigh travel access, nearby resources, terrain, and footprint rather than searching for one universal “best” location.
A compact starter layout
- Place storage near the entrance so unloading takes seconds.
- Group crafting stations together and leave clear space around them.
- Keep food, healing, repair supplies, and the gear you use most in labeled chests.
- Build a small covered recovery and comfort area, then expand the footprint only when a new station or project needs it.
- Use freely named chests and custom markers to make a growing base and map easier to navigate.
Two 1.0 quality-of-life improvements are especially useful for builders: storage chests can be upgraded in place, including conversion to Magic Chests, and the new Airborne Architect skill enables free-flying construction mode. The official changelog describes the skill as a way to build in hard-to-reach places. Check the skill tree before planning a project around it.
